Athens

Thousands from the gay community all over the country are calling Athens home. Over the last decade Athens has become the center for gay activity. This is quite amazing as the general Greek mindset is one that is still quite conservative thanks to the strong influence of the Orthodox Church. Though the country is considered to be conservative, gay travelers need not worry when traveling here, instead, just be aware of the leanings of the culture.
As a gay traveler remember that the Greeks often do not eat dinner until at least 10pm, so that nightlife will tend to start later than most other places. In Athens you’ll tend to find an abundance of smaller bars and clubs to visit. Athens tends to lack large dance clubs because Greeks are more reluctant to dance so they prefer the smaller venues.
If you are looking for the gayborhood then venture to Gazi, around the crossroads of Lera Odos and Konstaninoupoleos Street. For the older generations you may find that you’re better suited with venues featuring a more classic Athenian vibe, so head over to Syngrou Avenue (Near the temple of Zeus).
When in Gazi, we recommend you drop in for a taste of Lesbos at Sapphos, a small bar run by a lesbian couple hailing from the famed island. If you have some more time then check out Myrovolos, which is a popular all day hangout with great people and delicious pizza that you’re sure to love. At night, head over to Aleco’s which is located in the hip theatre neighborhood Psyrri, you’ll also find a quaint little bar around bar.
Keep in mind when approaching the locals: Don’t be put off if they come off as stand-offish or cold. In Greece, the locals come to terms with their sexuality, they don’t want to appear as too eager. Pursue your desires and be rewarded!
