Bloomberg orders NYC offices to open Sunday for same-sex marriage licenses
On Wednesday, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced clerk offices will be opened on Sunday, July 24, the same day the gay marriage law takes effect.
“This is a historic moment for New York, a moment many couples have waited years and even decades to see – and we are not going to make them wait one day longer than they have to,” Bloomberg said.
City officials expect large crowds and may extend hours to accommodate the demand. Several Judges will also be on hand to perform same-sex marriage ceremonies that first day.
Officials in Binghamton also plan to keep their offices open to assist couples. Most cities in New York will begin offering marriage licenses on Monday, July 25.
Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the marriage bill hours after it was approved by the Senate. Last month, New York became the sixth and most populous state to legalize gay marriage.
