The five-minute ascent to the top of Table Mountain offers a360° view of Cape Town, the ocean and the neighboring peaks. Once at the topvisitors enjoy spectacular views and the peaceful feeling of being over onethousand metres above the city below. The area at the top of the mountain issurprisingly large so leave enough time to stroll along the paths, enjoy theviewing platforms and soak up the vistas.

The Cableway operates in the Table Mountain National Park,an important part of the Cape Floristic Region and the single richest floristicarea in the world. This area is also a World Heritage Site. There is a lot ofFynbos vegetation on the mountain, with over 1 460 different species of plants.

The paths cover a distance of more than 2km at the top ofthe mountain, making for comfortable walking to lookout points from whichvisitors can view spectacular vistas over the city, Clifton, Sea Point, theV&A Waterfront, Table Bay, Robben Island, the Cape Flats and the CapePeninsula. You will also see Lion’s Head, Signal Hill and Devil’s Peakmountains. You have good views of the newly completed Cape Town Stadium, builtto host the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Many visitors enjoy walking up the mountain and taking thecable car back down. The recommended route for the walk up is via PlatteklipGorge to the Upper Cable Station. Although this hike is only about 3km, it is fairly strenuous and cantake between one and three hours to complete. It is a demanding walk, so it’snot recommended for young children. CM
