Taveuni: A Gay Birthday Paradise
You know the reason why I keep bringing up warm places during this winter season is that I absolutely LOATHE the cold. I’m from Southern California and even with the sun up all the time and 60 degree weather, it is still too cold for me. SO today I am going to talk about Taveuni island, a tiny resort island within the Fiji Islands. I spoke with Cherie Larson, a recent guest, who went with 50 year old birthday boy, Mark, and his partner, Ted. For your 50th birthday, you gotta do something wild, and on Taveuni, this gay birthday group got the royal treatment.
Taveuni is a lush island paradise, reminiscent of Hawaii. It is Polynesian so the flora, fauna, and people are similar. The resort itself is owned by a lovely New Zealand couple, and the workers give top notch customer service. There are a number of outdoorsy activities to do from snorkeling to scuba diving and you can even go on a tour where a guide takes you hiking under a waterfall. The resort serves three family style meals a day, where all the hotel residents dine together. Fruit in the morning, salad and an entrée for lunch, and a fish, meat or vegetarian option for dinner- Cherie pointed out it was all delicious but too much food!
Most of the guests that go to Taveuni come in pairs, as a couples vacation. Being that there were four people in Cherie’s party, Mark and Ted were the center of attention. The gay couple had lots of fun cocktailing it up and checking out the hot island locals. On Mark’s birthday night, all the hotel guests and staff gathered to throw him a surprise birthday bash. They had a birthday cake, and natives came and performed island dances. Honestly, it is often difficult trying to find accommodations that treat gay couples with an equitable level of service (that’s one of the reason why GayTravel exists- to point those places out). The fact that Taveuni Island Resort treated Mark and Ted like two kings, and Cherie part of royal court, shows how much of a gem this vacation spot is.
