The Gay Community Responds to the Haiti Earthquake
Just one week after the devastating earthquake that shook Haiti to the core, support continues to pour in from the around the world, and the generosity of the gay community has been astounding.
The Human Rights Campaign posted a plea for assistance on their website, blog and email newsletter, raising funds for CARE International, an organization aimed at addressing the immediate needs of survivors. Tegan and Sara, a lesbian music duo have announced that all proceeds from poster sales on their concert tour of Canada will go to relief efforts in Haiti. Charles King, the president of Housing Works in New York City has also arrived in Haiti’s capital to assist a coalition of groups for people with HIV and AIDS in administering much-needed medication and support.
Perhaps most interesting, the owners of gay cruise lines Atlantis Events, Olivia Cruises and RSVP Vacations have announced that they will donate $7500 each as well as give away a select number of free cruises to individuals who donate more than $7500 on Olivia Cruises. The funds will be bundled and recorded as contributions from LGBT Americans to the people of Haiti. As if that wasn’t enough, An Atlantis cruise that departed this past weekend from Miami will be stopping on the northern coast of Haiti to deliver additional supplies to areas in need.
The outpouring of support from the LGBT community has been incredible, and donations are still be collected. You can donate to Partner’s In Health – an organization committed to locally driven, sustainable health care in Haiti for more than twenty years – by following this link:Stand With Haiti
