Planning on ringing in 2012 south of the equator?  Check out our list of the best places to kick off the New Year in style!

10. Windhoek

If you’re looking to begin the new year in an exotic, low-key locale, consider Namibia’s capital and most cosmopolitan city.  There are many world-class resorts to choose from and several gay-friendly venues, including Plaza in Maerua Park.  German and African cultures combine for a travel experience like no other in the world.

9. Johannesburg

South Africa is the most liberal country in Africa and most accepting of the LGBT community.  If you find yourself in “The City of Gold” on New Year’s Eve, there are several great places to celebrate.  There are gay and lesbian bars with special events in the neighborhoods of Boksburg and Melville, as well as a few great venues in JoBurg’s Design District.

8.  Buenos Aires

Feliz Año Nuevo!  There are amazing parties happening throughout Argentina’s capital city but most of the gay New Year’s action will take place at venues in Microcentro/Monserrat, Recoleta and Villa Crespo.  So raise your Quilmes (a popular local beer) and celebrate with a bevy of hot Porteos.

7.  Auckland

“The City of Sails” boasts a population of more than a million residents, including a thriving LGBT community.  On New Year’s Eve, you’ll want to head to Ponsonby and K Roads, that’s where most of the gay nightlife is located.  Just look for the rainbow flags and get ready for the countdown.

6.  Lima

From great dance clubs to hole in the wall joints, there’s a great selection of places to usher in 2012 in Lima.  Most of the LGBT venues in Lince or Miraflores will be hosting parties or special events, but there are also great gay clubs and bars to check out in Centro de Lima.

5.  Bora Bora

Consider heading to paradise on earth and starting the year off with optimal relaxation.  Book your stay at a luxury hotel, lounge on the white sandy beaches and take a dip in the see-to-believe crystal blue waters.  This is the perfect destination for anyone looking for a romantic getaway with that special someone.

4.  Cape Town

The hottest event taking place on the African continent on January 1st, the Cape Minstrel Carnival, always draws a huge crowd.  On NYE, there’s a plethora of great queer parties on Long Street and beach celebrations in Clifton.  Variety is the key, there’s a party to suit any taste.

3.  Sao Paulo

The Sao Paulo gay scene isn’t as flamboyant as in Rio, but there’s still a variety of venues where you can dance your way into 2012 with hot locals.  The Jardim Paulista District is where you’ll find most of the LGBT action, as well as great dining and shopping options.

2.  Sydney

There’s no shortage of fabulous gay celebrations in Australia’s most metropolitan city.  If you’re at the Harbor, there’s a great LGBT party on the roof-top of the Museum of Contemporary Art.  Arq, a popular gay bar, also hosts a jam packed New Year’s celebration.

1.  Rio de Janeiro

There’s no party like a Rio party.  If you’re going to be in “Cidade Maravilhosa” or "The Marvelous City," head down to the massive NYE gathering at Copacabana Beach, followed by celebrations at gay bars and other parties taking place throughout the city.
