Let’s be real: Air travel is great—but it can be a real pain in the ass (and not the good kind). It’s a hugely inconvenient convenience, and many people would jump at any feasible alternative.

Last weekend, I traveled to New York City. It’s a short plane ride from my house (less than a half hour), but I opted for a different form of transportation. I took the train.

When it comes to Americans and vacation transportation, one survey found that nearly 90% of us travel by car, 7.5% by plane, 2.1% by bus—and a measly 0.8% by rail. I think it’s time we reverse the trend and show some love for train transport.

Here’s why:

1. No security lines. While airlines recommend getting to the airport two hours early, Amtrak recommends just thirty. In addition, you won’t be asked to remove your shoes, throw out liquids or deal with quart-sized baggies of toiletries. It’s a lot less hassle.

2. No baggage fees. $25 checked bag fees, no more! Amtrak won’t charge you for your luggage—and there’s no extra fee if it’s heavy. While train tickets aren’t much cheaper than flying, you’ll save a bundle if you’re traveling with more than a carryon.

3. More legroom. A few extra inches can make a world of difference. And sitting on a train, you’ll definitely notice. With plenty of room to stretch and spread out, you’ll feel like you’re traveling first class.

4. It’s relaxing. While many people find traveling stressful, trains are one of the easiest ways to go. The atmosphere is always more subdued and your fellow travelers will be a lot less frazzled. It’s a great time to catch up on your favorite book or to just kick back and enjoy the scenery.

5. Fewer weather delays. Rain, sleet, snow or shine, Amtrak trains are less affected by weather conditions. While airports are closed or flights are canceled, the trains are much more reliable—especially in northern or snowy climates.

6. WiFi and plugs. I love that Amtrak trains are equipped with plugs and, more recently, free WiFi. If you have work to do, it’s easy to get things done. The WiFi can be spotty at times, but it’s a great feature-in-progress.

7. 8 inches of recline. On a tightly packed plane, you’re lucky if you get two inches of recline. On a train, you get a full eight inches. It’s magnificent—and is extremely conducive to napping.

8. Stay connected! While air travelers must power down their phones and other electronic devices, there are no such concerns with rail travel. Provided you’re not in a designated “quiet car,” you’re free to use your phone as much as you’d like. And when the battery runs low, you’ll have an electrical outlet to power it up!

9. Don’t lose your bags. Ever lose your bags flying? Welcome to the club. On Amtrak, you’re your own bag handler. Unless you forget them on the train, they’re getting off with you. There’s no chance of you connecting to Atlanta and your bags arriving at O’Hare.

10. Greener. Depending on a number of variables including the type of train and aircraft, rail travel can represent a 70% - 90% reduction in CO2 emissions. For anyone being mindful of their carbon footprint, traveling by train is significantly greener.

Of course, train travel isn’t for everyone and every trip. The destinations are limited to the tracks, but if you’re looking to travel on a route served by rail, consider giving trains another chance. I think you’ll be glad you did.
