Name: George Thronas

Occupation: Manager of Hawaiian Culture and Community Relations at the Grand Hyatt Kauai

Where were you born and raised? Wailua, Kauai

How long have you lived on Kauai?: Nearly my entire life, with the exception of moving away for college. I also lived and worked in Orlando and Las Vegas.

Why did you move there?: Kauai has always been home! When the opportunity to move back to Kauai came up, I happily leaped. Why wouldn’t you choose to live and work in paradise?!

What's your favorite thing about the Grand Hyatt Kauai? What makes it stand out?: The location, the people, and the beauty of this Resort. Grand Hyatt Kauai truly is Grand, with beautiful, lush landscaping and stately architectural design, not to mention the natural beauty in which the resort is situated – Grand Hyatt Kauai is a true gem to behold.

Favorite restaurant on island?: Seriously, not being biased, but Tidepools at the Grand Hyatt Kauai.

Favorite bar/club in island?: Because it is near my home I go to Lava Lava Beach Club – located on the Eastside of Kauai it has a casual atmosphere and even allows you to sit by the ocean with your feet in the sand. But Stevenson’s Library at the Grand Hyatt Kauai definitely is one of the top bars, with its woodwork paying homage to the land’s history, detailing sugarcane and pineapples. It offers great views of the ocean and resort as well as creative drinks and ono (delicious) sushi.

Favorite place to unwind on Kauai?: Polihale State Beach Park – long white stretch of sand, with spectacular views of the Napali Coast.

Where’s the best place to enjoy the outdoors on your island?: Any hiking trail or beach and Kokee State Park.

What’s one thing that Kauai has to offer that you can't find anywhere else?: Napali Coast. Sweeping 2,000+ foot cliffs and delicate waterfalls that fall straight into the deep blue ocean, untouched beauty that is simply breathtaking.

Best gay club/restaurant/attraction?: All establishments on Kauai are gay friendly. The LGBTQIA organization on Island called Lambda Aloha partners with businesses and the community to host events on Island.

What three things do I have to pack to enjoy Kauai to the fullest?: Swimsuit, hiking shoes, and sunglasses.

Best time of year to visit?: Kauai has exceptional weather year round with temperatures ranging from 72-85. As in all tropical climates, expect some passing showers here and there, keeping it fresh and green. Anytime of the year is great. Quietest time is the first 2-3 weeks of December.

I’m on island for 24 hours, what are 3 things I absolutely have to do?: Hike the Mount Nounou (Sleeping Giant) trail, Visit the Waimea Canyon, and watch the Sunset at Hanalei Bay.

What’s something people would be surprised to learn about Kauai?: Only about 10% of the land on Kauai is and can be developed. Most of the island is inaccessible by car,  with rugged, lush vegetation covering the rest.  It begs exploration with exceptional hiking trails all around the island.
