The battle for LGBT rights will now be honored with a national monument.
The White House announced Friday that President Obama will officially designate a national monument at the site of the Stonewall uprising to honor the history of the LGBT rights movement in the United States.
The Stonewall uprising started in 1969 when a group of club patrons at the Stonewall Inn fought back against harassment and police raids.
The moment sparked other riots and protests against the criminalization of homosexuality.
“I believe our national parks should reflect the full story of our country, the richness and diversity an uniquely American spirit that has always defined us,” Obama says in a video about the designation. “That we are stronger together. That out of many, we are one.”
Stonewall is the first site in the National Park Service to recognize the struggle for LGBT rights.
