Sail the Mae Khong River to the Golden Triangle | Golden Triangle, Thailand | One of the tours you should consider in thearea of the Golden Triangle, Chiang Saen or Chiang Rai, is the sailing alongthe Ruak River to the intersection of the Mae Khong River. Board your long tail boat, sail by bamboofields, small fishing villages and decide where you would like to spend therest of your day. The options are Thailand, Myanmar (Burma) or Laos.
I chose to visit Laos and the local market on the GoldenTriangle’s water border with Thailand. The Golden Triangle is one of Asia’s twomain illicit opium-producing areas. Most of the world’s heroin came from theGolden Triangle until the early 21st century when Afghanistan became theworld’s largest producer
My tour was coordinated by the Four Seasons Tented CampsGolden Triangle, but there are tours operators and long tail boat rentals allalong the Mae Khong River. Stay out of trouble and do not cross over to theCasinos on the Laos side of the river. Thailand forbids the existence ofcasinos on their territory, so casinos and local markets have proliferated allalong the Laos’s coast.
