The world’s 10 best passports don’t include America or the UK, according to new research.

The findings show that the Swedish passport is apparently the best.

Meanwhile, Britain comes in at number 16. Also, the US at a disappointing number 35…

The findings come from offshore consulting firm Nomad Capitalist, who have ranked 199 passports globally.

A spokesperson said the results are based on ‘how many countries they can travel to without a visa, tax freedoms, the world’s perception of the country and its citizens, and the ability to maintain other citizenships and the ability of its citizens to live freely.’

What’s more, the website states: ‘Swedish citizens can not only visit 176 countries without a visa, but they enjoy an excellent reputation abroad. [Also] the ability to hold dual or multiple citizenships, high levels of personal freedom, and the ability to easily escape Swedish taxes by moving overseas.’

Number two is another European country: Belgium.

The Index states that the country is ‘home to the European Union, and its citizens enjoy plenty of freedom of movement not only around Europe, but to 174 countries globally. Belgian expats enjoy relative tax freedom. And all Belgians benefit from an open attitude toward other cultures and dual citizenship.’

The Afghan passport comes last. Iraq, meanwhile, comes second to last.

The top 10 of the ranking is as follows:

  • 1 109 – Sweden
  • 2 108 – Belgium
  • 3 107.5 – Spain
  • 3 107.5 – Italy
  • 5 107 – Ireland
  • 6 106.5 – Finland
  • 6 106.5 – Germany
  • 8 106 – Denmark
  • 8 106 – Switzerland
  • 8 106 – Luxembourg
