Gay Welcoming Puerto Vallarta Accommodations
Situated in the heart of old town Puerto Vallarta (Zona Romantica). Rivera del Rio is a Gay friendly hotel located on the bank of the Rio Cuale and the last remaining dirt road of old town.
Hailed by Casas and Gente Magazine as one of the world’s top architectural lady designers, N.Y Interior designer Billy Baldwin called her eclectic abode “the house of dreams” - a true Boutique Hotel.
Stars from all over the globe have crossed her threshold; from Raquel Welch to the jewel fashion icon Ken Lane. Her flowing manta curtains captured not only the movie cameras of Tony Scott but countless films and set locations from Vogue to Italian Elle. John Crocus labeled lasting acquaintances "Silver," and fashion icon Perry Ellis, the "Luxury Lovers."
Bathing in an emerald pool forget five stars, you will find a web of stars as you savor the 360 degree view of a jaguared Jungle, or languish in the Greek oyster alabaster spa, particularly sensuous in the pearly glow of moonlight.
Each newly remodeled and carefully crafted apartment is decorated with heavenly marbled fireplaces, Victorian leopard-claw tubs, and crispy cold air conditioners that will acclimate you to Vallarta's heavenly temperatures. The Rivera del Rio is one of the few haciendas in Puerto Vallarta to offer a wholly purified water system!
Paradise awaits you - A true joy and delight at your beck and call! Viva Mexico!

- Amazing Amenities
Gay Travel recently had the privilege to sit down with the proprietor of the Rivera del Rio Boutique Hotel, Alexander Killen who shared his insight on the local area LGBT travelers should know about when visiting Puerto Vallarta as well as why the Rivera del Rio may be the perfect accommodations for any traveler's visit to Puerto Vallarta.
Alex: What makes the local area such a great LGBT destination?
GT: We are in the heart of Puerto Vallarta which is a very naturally open culture, it’s a very safe place with a gay friendly population with a small town feel. You get a mix of everything because while you’re in a small town you still experience influences of people visiting from all over the world.
GT: Tell us 5 Reasons why travelers should choose to stay at your hotel.
Alex: We are for the distinguished traveler who wants to be in town, wants to be able to walk absolutely everywhere and get a real taste of the local flavors.
Our staff has been with us forever and know how to make people feel at home when they stay with us and offer true comfort along with luxury that you can’t find at many other places.
We deliver a very personal touch to all our guests and tailor the experience to each one individually. We always talk to the guests and get a feel of what they are looking to get out of their visit and steer them in the right direction.
We are on a residential street right by the river so guests feel like they are a local living in Puerto Vallarta yet they are still pampered as our guests.
This is an artistic property with original pieces everywhere that is not very common and not what you would find at any large commercial hotel.
GT: Any Insider tips for LGBT travelers visiting Puerto Vallarta?
Alex: Try things off the beaten path! It’s a small town but there is so much to do outside the local tourists area and it’s extremely safe to explore. Uncommon Grounds is a lounge that is great for chilling out just down the street from our hotel and is owned by two women and they serve the best desserts in town and very high quality food and the drinks are amazing. It’s a place you would never know to go, they don’t advertise, they aren’t in any of the gay guides. If you take the time to talk to the locals you can discover so much more about Puerto Vallarta and make your visit here so much more enjoyable.
GT: So you’re here in Puerto Vallarta but you speak perfect english with an American accent, that must be a great advantage for American travelers who stay with you and are able to communicate the best things to do and see in the area.
AIex: I was born here but raised in the United States so I feel I have a really good grasp of both cultures and my partner Diego is Argentinian so he’s a South American and Rosio who helps us with the concierge is from here so we have such a great team that work well with our diverse clientele that stay with us. We cater to straight couples gay couples and everything in between.
GT: Your family has a special history here in Puerto Vallarta, could you share a little of that story with us?
Alex: “Silver” Maria Cortez was my grandmother, a Texan who didn’t really want to stay in Texas and came down to Puerto Vallarta and decided she wanted to stay. She bought a little plot of land on the beach (which she purchased under the name of a taxi driver because Americans couldn’t own property here at the time) hired some construction workers and brick by brick she laid her houses. This was at a time when people didn’t have the luxury of taking a flight to Puerto Vallarta, it was a hidden destination and she became a pioneer in the fact that she came down and built a property and got the word out on Puerto Vallarta by word of mouth in the U.S.. She attracted people like Elizabeth Taylor and other interesting personalities which began our history entertaining celebrity guests and she became a big figure in the area and even got the first liquor license in a gay bar here. Her involvement really helped boom the gay community in Puerto Vallarta with the gay bar and liqour license and by bringing tourism to the area.
Another thing that’s so importnat is that we have a lot of well known people who come here and no one knows who they are which is a very relaxing expeience for them and we enjoy offering a place for them to stay without secluding themselves from the culture of the area. The house has been in a number of movies such as, "Gunmen" which has a scene where they blow up our kitchen here and other films that feature many of our unique bedrooms and some of the original furniture and settings of the house.
GT: We know you have entertained some big names at the River Del Rio, who would you say is your dream guest?
Alex: Wow thats hard because there are so many artistic people we attract, Bianca del Rio will be doing a birthday party here at some point which with our name being Rivera del Rio I think it suits pretty well name wise. My ultimate dream would be to have Tori Amos here, I really like her charities and what she stands for and one day it would be a dream of mine to have her stay here with her family and get to play our piano.
