Travel writer Michel Luongo calls Buenos Aires one of the world’s sexiest and most sophisticated gay destinations, and he’s spot on. Steamy days and sultry nights are bound to get your pulse throbbing – and check your heartbeat if it doesn’t, because you might be dead! Buenos Aires is a smart and sexy city that is full of passion, dance and history. Miles of architecture dominate large avenues like the gorgeous 9 de Julio, where Porteos gracefully flit from boutique to café.
The city is divided into equal squares, with one-way streets going one way and the adjacent parallels going the other – so if the taxi goes back the other way, that’s expected! The Subte underground system is not extensive, but goes everywhere travelers frequent.
Being in the Southern Hemisphere, the colder months are May through September, with the serious warmth coming in October to March. The winter months are indeed much cooler than most, given the prevalent winds. Rain is also more common in the summer months, with rain and hailstorms not uncommon.
Most areas are relatively safe during the day, and avoid La Boca and parts of San Telmo at night. Recoleta and Barrio Norte are safe, with people wandering carefree late into the evening. “Moto robos,” where thieves steal purses and bags from a scooter, have become more common as well – so hold tight!
