Gay Copenhagen

Copenhagen, one of the most gay-friendly cities in the world, has a special kind of charm. The identifiable emblem of the city, Edvard Ericksen’s whimsical 1913 sculpture “The Little Mermaid,” stands guard over the picturesque harbor. The colorful 400-year-old buildings are on a bustling shopping street where cars are forbidden. Quiet parks where swans glide on placid lakes and bustling city squares where people congregate to feed the birds and themselves provide fascinating vistas. On every side, you’ll find things that will delight all your senses. If you consider yourself a real gay traveler then Gay Copenhagen should be on your list of places to visit and our gay and lesbian travel guide will help you cross it off your list by helping you find the best of the gay nightlife, the gay-friendly restaurants, and a gay-friendly hotel where you can stay.

Love of freedom. Freedom to love. That was the slogan during World Outgames 2009 in Copenhagen, and it has never rung truer in Copenhagen than today. Copenhageners are open-minded, relaxed, and tolerant people, and the capital city has long been a playground for both gay Danes and tourists. Here you can be free, open, and most of all yourself.

LGBT History:

  • The National Association for Gays and Lesbians (LGBT Denmark) was founded by Axel Axgil in 1948 as the first of its kind in the world.
  • In 1989, Denmark was the first country in the world to recognize registered partnerships for same-sex couples. Thus Danes Eigil and Axel Axgil were the first couples in the world to enter into a registered same-sex partnership, after 40 years of being engaged.
  • In 2009, Copenhagen hosted the World Outgames, and it became possible for registered gay couples to adopt children.
  • In 2012, it became possible for gay people to be married in church.
  • In 2014, Copenhagen City Council named a central square next to City Hall Rainbow Square in honor of LGBT and equal rights.
  • Copenhagen is home to one of Europe’s oldest gay bars, Centralhjørnet from 1917, which openly became a gay bar in the 1950s.
