Ithaca
0Cornell University isn’t the only thing in Ithaca that deserves an A+. Ithaca is a gay travel hot-spot with a plethora of entertainment options including professional theater troupes, museums and farmers markets where you can find locals tickling their taste buds. Food festivals, like The Apple Festival or The Chili Festival, happen throughout the year. If a taste of the Ithaca arts scene is what you’re after, The Ithaca Festival and Parade is the place to look!
Because of its location on a flatland, gay-friendly Ithaca experiences milder seasons than the surrounding area- but seasons none the less. Summers can be humid, while winters can be cold and snowy. If you happen to be traveling in the late fall or early spring, beware of the phenomenon known by locals as “ithacation”: a mixed bag of snow, rain, and wind. Beautiful forests and wildlife adorn Ithaca all year round.
Ithaca is relatively easy to access considering it has its own airport and elaborate bus system that reaches the major tourist destinations around the city. However, having a car is ideal- especially when trying to reach residential and outlying areas. When weather permits, Ithaca is also a bike-friendly city. This helps avoid congestion in the downtown sector especially- although with such awesome areas to visit, who blames all of the eager drivers!
Known as one of America’s most liberal and enlightened towns, Ithaca is an ideal place for LGBT visitors. Like so many other college towns, it boasts a high quality of life for all who frequent it. Crime does exist in some of the rougher areas, but Ithaca has a notably large and diverse police force that definitely exerts a presence. In general, the most threatening thing to be cautious of is rowdy college students.
