LGBT Scene in Shanghai

Shanghai, China’s most dynamic and cosmopolitan city, is exactly what you’d expect it to be, the country’s most open metropolis for LGBT nightlife and lifestyle. In the scenic French Concession you’ll find the city’s two most popular gay bars, Shanghai Studio and Eddy’s Bar.

Both bars stay open till 2 am, with the latter open till 4 am from Friday thru Sunday. With no open container rules in Shanghai you’ll see plenty of travelers and expats perched on convenience store steps near bar areas having a drink between venue changes. Bars and clubs in Shanghai only accept local currency and cards, so make sure you have enough RMB for the evening. ATMs often have daily withdraw limits for foreign bank cards, so while easily available, if a withdraw has already been made that day it may turn down your card.

At Shanghai Studio and Eddy’s Bar you’ll find a mix of locals, expats and travelers. Eddy’s Bar is more of a place to start a night out and is usually busiest before 12 am. If you’re looking for a late night place, head down the street to Shanghai Studio. While the bar looks small on the outside and the doorway is somewhat hidden inside you’ll find a maze of rooms and risqué art exhibits.
