No it’s not the Twilight Zone and yes, David, this is real life. Tuesday nights on the Castro have been designated to button up shirts, high heels, short fingernails and an alarming lack of nail polish. Lesbians come in all sorts of hair lengths and attire, but the bottom line is this; if you’re a female at Lime or Q bar, expect to be served with first class service all night… at coach prices. These Tuesday night hot spots discount food and booze just for the ladies. Swarms of girls + music + patches of sloppy midnight dancing = what I discovered on my shoot for Gay Travel.
Before I narrate for you my night, I must say this: The Castro is normally thriving with guys, the presence of women there is much like an endangered species that businesses are rallying to keep alive. Not to leave the boys out, but I wanted to direct a little of the spotlight for the girls this time. Thanks for the understanding, guys!
My journey to creating the lovely GT videos I’ve submitted began at 6pm and oddly enough, at a Guitar Center where I was to pick up a stick mic for interviewing. For those of you who have yet to visit San Francisco, I have a few words to summarize the experience: cold, windy, sparse parking. Bird nest hair and wind-chapped lips later, I managed to park, walk, purchase, walk, drive, park, walk and stumble into Lime where I met, Greg, my camera operator/editor.
Now, Greg and I go way back and he is one of the best I’ve worked with, so when he told me, upon his arrival at our first location, that he forgot his camera light, I was in utter disbelief.
::This is the part where my mouth was wide open, Greg and I staring at each other for about 14 seconds in total silence::
Q Bar, our second location, is a dungeon of a bar in terms of lighting. We couldn’t possibly shoot with the absence of a light. I wanted to shake the soul out of his body!!
No panic here. We both know plenty of production friends in the area so we sent out a few, “I’ll owe you my first born” text messages and began filming.
The staff at Lime, who I’m so lucky to know personally, was incredible. They set up everything we needed at a last minute request. You see; I called them Tuesday morning asking for permission to film there because I enjoy living on the edge. I often flirt with danger.
Lucky for us, our friend, Roland rushed in, as he always does, and delivered a shiny camera light- just in the knick of time. And with that we took off to Q Bar looking for trouble.
Wind blown locks, pink cheeks and 4 entire city blocks after departing Lime, we arrived at Q Bar. It was packed with the ladies. Greg combed my hair and I powdered his face, it was go time.
The staff and the dense sea of bodies in Q Bar were all just delightful. We managed to cover all bases, have a few drinks, give each other a high five and call it a wrap.
I’m not exactly sure how, but my night ended on the other side of San Francisco helping a friend close her bar. There I was: wiping, sweeping and singing to The Police at 3am.
If you all want an in-depth review of both venues, they can be found in my profile reviews and my videos give you the skinny on all details along with interviews of staff, enjoy!
