Cancun / Ek Balam / Rio Lagartos / Chichen Itza After breakfast we begin out journey of the Yucatan, first stopping at the archeological site of Ek Balam. While exploring these ancient ruins, keep an eye out for the 5m tall jaguar's mouth and a large Mayan warrior. This site, while magnificent in its design and scope, is still not quite yet on the main tourist route. We continue on to Rio Largartos where we will stop and have some free time for lunch. Rio Lagartos is a small fishing community home to hundreds of fabulous pink flamingos, one of the largest concentrations in the Western Hemisphere. We'll board a ship and cruise through the waters in search for these creatures and stop along the way to take a dip into these waters to cool off as well. We continue on to Chichen Itza tonight and enjoy the light and sound show in the archeological site. Meals: B. |

Chichen Izta / Izamal / Merida After an early breakfast, we enter the Chichen Itza site. This huge pre-Columbian complex was once a ceremonial centre and played a major role for the Mayas. We'll spend some time here exploring the huge pyramid, the infamous ball-court and even an observatory. Following Chichen Itza, we continue on to Izamal, known as the "Yellow City" for a brief visit and lunch. It's just a short drive from Izamal on to Merida, the capital city of the Yucatan state. Merida is a prosperous, charming city with narrow streets, colonial buildings, and shaky cool parks. This evening dinner is included at a local restaurant, then why not try out some of the local clubs and bars? Meals: B, D. |

We'll walk along the ruins and peek into the chambers of priests, nobles and warriors. After our included lunch, we drive on to Sayil. Sayil, founded in the late classical era, was estimated to house around 9000 inhabitants, not a small city by any account. We visit the El Palacio, the largest building in Sayil, boasting an 85 metre façade and a height of three stories. We drive on to Campeche and enjoy a tour of this fortified city, founded in 1540. The remaining of the afternoon and evening are free at leisure for you to explore and enjoy. Meals: B, L. |
