  • Gay Scene in Johannesburg

Johannesburg

South Africa was the 5th country to legalize gay marriage, and the rights of homosexuals are enshrined in the new South African constitution, which is one of the most progressive constitutions in the world. Gay rights were codified shortly after abolishing apartheid because if you’re gonna fight for equal rights, you might as well do it for everyone, right?

Despite the occasional incidents of homophobic violence (especially towards lesbians in small towns), gay people in major urban areas like Joburg, Durban, and Cape Town should have no real trouble. All of these areas have a thriving gay nightlife and out gay population. And because South Africa is Africa’s most gay-friendly destination, thousands of gay African tourists travel here.
