Hidden behind an unobtrusive exterior, the Moroccan themed Akbar has been serving the Silverlake Community for almost 15 years.  Known widely for its incredible jukebox and cheap, heavy handed drinks Akbar has been recognized from Logo TV to the LA Weekly and Buzz Magazine as one of the best gay bars in America.  And its true, Akbar represents what a gay bar should be:  fun, eclectic, and comfortable for everyone be they Weho Gym Bunny, Leather Bear Daddy or Straight Urban Hipster.  Weekends are packed often with a line to get in since dancing is scarce in the Silverlake area and Akbar turns out fun dance tunes spun by djs who’s collections are often as diverse as the jukebox.  During the week check out Bruce Daniels’s Drunk on stage on Tuesdays where you can often find comedians like Margret Cho or Kathy Najimy trying out new material or hang with Juliana on Wednesdays when she hosts a long running ever popular craft night in the back room.  Or check out every second Sunday’s Bears in Space, a very popular dance party catering to the hirsute crowd and it’s admirers.
