Side by side with your man or in a group, you will enter a world of cobblestone streets lined with stately mansions, beautiful squares, art galleries, restaurants and picturesque markets. Coyoacan’s social life unfolds in Centenario and Hidalgo Squares just in front of its 16th Century Franciscan cloister, the atrium of the Saint John the Baptist church, enriched by cafés, bars, bookstores, museums and festivals. As a tour guide I always enjoy going with visitors since every time we enjoy different sides of the neighborhood: colorful during the day and legendary at night, as a homage to the coyotes, the root of the town’s ancient name.
Coyoacan played host to celebrated people such as Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, and Salvador Novo a surprising open Mexican gay intellectual of the XX Century. Their presence can still be felt, not only in their former residences, but in the intense cultural life that pervades the atmosphere among the theaters and galleries. There you’ll find the “Culturas Populares” Museum, a showcase for the lavish manifestations of the Mexican character. If you live in Mexico you can also enjoy the Olimpic pool, and “Viveros” an excellent park for jogging, where cruising may be part of the sport. If you are a cinema lover, Cineteca Nacional has four theaters devoted to a Mexican and international selection of films, where notable handsome guys can be seen also. Art in capital letters can be enjoyed at the “Centro Nacional de las Artes” (CNA) where Dance, Drama and Classical Music have their school and home of talented young artists.
