Free is good, or at least that’s one reason why the ferry to Algiers is an easy addition to an itinerary. It’s free of charge for pedestrians, and $1 for cars making the return trip back from the West Bank, and you’ll see some fantastic views of the city as you cross the crescent turn of the Mississippi.
You can board the ferry, in operation since 1827, at the end of Canal Street, right next to the Aquarium of the Americas. It runs from 6am to 12:15am, and leaves the New Orleans side at :15 and :45 past the hour.
The ferry drops you off in Algiers Point, the historic original city of New Orleans that was completely unaffected by Hurricane Katrina. Once there, you can wander the riverfront Louis Armstrong Jazz Walk of Fame, explore the pleasant 19th century neighborhoods, or grab a bite at any of the local pubs and cafes. There is also a self-guided walking tour provided by the Algiers Historical Society. For more information, please visit http://algierspoint.org/AHS/walking.html.
And of course, bringing a boozy beverage on the boat is allowed so wander on down from the Quarter and take a sojourn to Algiers.
