The Statue of Liberty – neé La Liberté éclairant le monde, or the Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World – was a gift from the people of France to the United States. It is a colossal statue sitting on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, and is accessible via ferry from Battery Park in NYC or Liberty State Park in New Jersey.
The statue itself is made of copper plates that were molded, like a puzzle, to fit the frame. It stands at 151 feet and 1 inch, and stands on a grand pedestal. The statue’s skin is made with sheets are about the thickness of a nickel and have changed color over time, giving the statue an inconsistent green hue from oxidation.
It’s quite the experience, and is highly recommended! There are a limited number of pedestal tickets, which can be obtained either with a New York Pass or by purchasing your tickets early. If you do not have a pedestal ticket, you cannot go up!
For advance planners, 240 people per day are allowed up to the crown and tickets can be reserved up to one year in advance. Get on it!
