THE EDITOR RECOMMENDS:

Need a place to stay in LA? The Custom Hotel is an ultra-hip, modern airport hotel and 20 minutes away from Weho. This affordable luxe hotel draws a lively crowd to their bi-level pool bar, Hopscotch, and features some great DJ’s playing everything from electro-jazz to Afro-Cuban, future-bossa and other hyphenates even I couldn’t dream up. They also offer layover rooms for those weary LAX travelers, and who wouldn’t want to snuggle up in such a clean, comfortable, and chic space.

Greetings LGBT Travelers!

Family means many things for the lgbt community; from partners and children, to friends and relations. Many of us have families of choice, and what better way to celebrate them than to plan a vacation with those we love in mind. This issue of the Astrolabe is all about family fun with style – because life is a vacation!

Family Style

Family vacations. For many of us, this conjures memories of station wagons, corny songs and fights with siblings in the back seat. I spy something with my little eye starting with…are we there yet? Thankfully, as adults (at least my driver’s license says so) we can now plan those family vacations, and leave the family wagon in the rearview mirror. So get your folks together and redefine the family vacation in style.

Mouse Ears
Ok, I’ll admit it. I’m still a sucker for the mouse. Disney Gay Days at are a gay travel tradition, and probably best suited for those adult family members; not to worry – every day of the year is a celebration for those of us with children. But anyone who is a child at heart can’t help but love Uncle Walt’s just a little. Universal Orlando Resort has some great Hot Deals as well; from 15% off your stay to free theme park tickets with your stay.

Hey Mouseketeers!
 Hojo Anaheim
Just across from the Magic Kingdom, Howard Johnson’s Anaheim is an award-winning accommodation and is one of the “Good Neighbor Hotels” for Disneyland. Named “Hojo Hotel of the Year”, it has been completely renovated with 2 heated pools, 24 hour reception, free parking and 7 acres of landscaped grounds. This Hojo flagship hotel welcomes ALL families.

The Maine Event

Maine is a traditional summer destination. Beautiful weather, historic surroundings, and most importantly, all the lobster you can eat. Ogunquit is a truly gay-friendly town and the Admiral’s Inn is one of the best places to stay. Choose from the charming newly-renovated B&B or the historic inn, you can stay in comfort and style. The inn offers brand new suites some with Jacuzzis and fireplaces or kitchenettes for family style vacationing. Two Village Square is another wonderful small gay inn for adult families who are looking for the perfect gay Ogunquit getaway. Lovely grounds with space for groups and great views of the ocean make this B&B a nice summer alternative to large hotel vacations.

Astrolabe - definition from Wikipedia
The astrolabe is a historical astronomical instrument used by classical astronomers, navigators, and astrologers. Its many uses included locating and predicting the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets and stars; determining local time given local longitude and vice-versa; surveying; and triangulation. In the Islamic world, they are and were used primarily for astronomical studies, though astrology was often involved there as well. Astrologers of the European nations used astrolabes to construct horoscopes.
