Astrolabe - definition from Wikipedia
The astrolabe is a historical astronomical instrument used by classical astronomers, navigators, and astrologers. Its many uses included locating and predicting the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets and stars; determining local time given local longitude and vice-versa; surveying; and triangulation. Tehuantepec, Mexico: All-Gay Vela Tour, Nov. 20-25, 2008
Located on the isthmus of Tehuantepec, there is a society of men who live as women (similar to Native American berdaches) called Muxes. The Muxes are held in high esteem by this society and age to be prominent female figures, with jobs in politics, education, and esthetics, and are accepted by many walks of life.
For the past 20 years, the Muxes of Juchitán de las Flores have held their annual ‘Vela’ or ball. The Vela consists of a Catholic mass to start off in the morning, followed by a big breakfast at the annual hostess house, followed by the Vela Saturday night in cocktail dress. Sunday is the Lavado de Olla, or ‘potwash party’, when all the Muxes wear the traditional regional dress and pass the mayordomia over to the next year´s hostess.
This tour features cooking demonstrations and classes, visits to craft villages, and you’ll have the opportunity to learn from the Muxes of Juchitán about their lives, and to experience an incredible fiesta. Trajes (the regional costume) are rented for all participants. The last day is spent cooking under a thatched roof palapa on a tranquil, pristine beach before your return to Bahías de Huatulco, where this tour begins and ends.
