My friend Matthew and I just went there the other night. It was really great! The good and service was pretty impeccable! My ‘spirit’ brother, Matthew, who has spent a lot of time traveling extensively throughout Greece was a bit more “adventurous” by ordering the octupus while I stuck with one of the specials (lamb shank). Still, from starter dishes to dessert, the food was amazingly prepared and served. The restaurant has been around for 10 years (so they know what they’re doing). It’s nestled in the Cow Hollow district of San Francisco which is en route to the Golden Gate Bridge. It’s a neighborhood where there are tons of other restaurants of all kinds, a virtual melting pot of cultural cuisines from around the world. However, Mezes, iin my humble opinion, stands out among the competiton. A quick sampling of the menu: Kefalograviera Saganaki ( which is traditional greek dry goat cheese pan seared, drizzled with lemon, then there’s the Psari (which is imported fresh Mediterranean fish marinated in extra virgin olive oil, lemon, salt, pepper, oregano, grilled. The restaurant voted THE BEST GREEK RESTAURANT in 2010 by the San Francisco Chronicle/SF GATE is truly a taste of Greece. It’s almost uber gay friendly ( which is for me very important) yet it has a homey, family, neighborhood feel. One of the greatest things about San Francisco beyond its ‘iconic’ tourist attractions (i.e., Fisherman’s Wharf, Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Coit Tower, North Beach, TransAmerica pyramid building) is the city’s neighborhoods. And, to dine in a special place like Mezes located in one of the city’s neighborhood where nightlife and restaurants come alive and thrive was pretty splendid. By the way, just a few doors down is restaurant A16. We haven’t gone there just yet but, from the looks of it, I get the sense that it’ll be a culinary experience worth mentioning next time! Stay tuned.
