As a resident, I never once ventured forth unto a cable car and how I wish that I
had sooner! This is a fun, quintessentially San Francisco treat that should not be missed
when you visit the City by the Bay.
The first cable car was put into operation in San Francisco in 1873, and today is
the last operational mechanical cable car system in the entire world. It’s also the only
transportation network listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The cable cars
are a peculiar treasure, icons that continue to be an integral part of the city’s identity.
Purchase your ticket ($5 one way) at the Powell St Turnaround, at Market, and
wait your turn to board the cable car. You can either go to Hyde and Beach (and grab an
Irish Coffee at the Buena Vista Café) or you can go to Taylor Beach and be a bit closer to
Fisherman’s Wharf.
Let the risk-averse take the seats, and plant yourself on the running board for a
completely awesome experience!
