Ybor City was founded in 1886 by Vicente Martinez-Ybor as a cigar-manufacturing center. The buildings and streets are made of brick, with wrought iron elements that gives the city a New Orleans style, old world ambiance. The area, amongst other old towns took a downturn, but a huge revitalization and queer renaissance has been underway for several years and is paying off. In 2007 the GaYbor District Coalition was formed and is now over 250 members strong & growing. In fact, the GaYBOR District has been announced by LOGO TV & OUT TRAVELER MAGAZINE as one of the best gay destinations of USA.
