The First Nations people were the original people on the land that is now known as Canada. There are many First Nations tribes, and in Whistler, BC, there are two tribes that have agreed to share stewardship of the area: the Squamish and the Lil’wat peoples.
Coming together in support of their homeland, the two tribes have worked tirelessly to make the Squamish Lil’Wat Cultural Centre a reality. They say about Whistler: “Where rivers, mountains, and people meet,” and they do a wonderful job at explaining and sharing their tribes’ shared history with visitors. It is an inspiring display of shared responsibility, encouraging visitors to imagine how cooperation over stewardship of our earth could work.
Adults and children alike will enjoy the interactive exhibits, the chance to make bracelets made of cedar, and to learn about the many traditional techniques that are being reborn and cultivated by the latest generation of proud First Nations people.
