Lesbian filmmakers are dominating Kansas City’s annual gay and lesbian film festival this year, which kicks off June 26 and runs through July 2 at Tivoli Cinemas in Westport.Standouts include:“The Baby Formula”: This mockumentary by Alison Reid is a story about two Canadian lesbians who try an experimental scientific process to produce sperm from their own stem cells in an effort to get preggers. They both get pregnant at the same time and once the family gets involved, things get chaotic … and quite funny.“Training Rules”: This story, directed by Dee Mosbacher and Fawn Yacker, focuses on the homophobic reign of Penn State women’s basketball coach Rene Portland. Portland had three rules for her team: no drinking, no drugs and no lesbians.“Drool”: Filmmaker Nancy Kissam blends a little “Thelma and Louise” with “Little Miss Sunshine” in her debut film about interracial lesbian romance. This movie stars Laura Harring of “Mullholland Drive.”“Hannah Free”: Starring Sharon Gless, this movie delves into the (non)rights of same-sex partners, specifically during the aging process. Directed by Wendy Jo Carlson.–Wendy
