Gay coming-of-age drama Moonlight is nominated for a shock eight nominations at the Oscars, the most it has had this award season.

It is competing for Best Picture alongside frontrunners La La Land and Arrival, while Barry Jenkins is up for Best Direction and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris received nominations for their acting performances, while Nicholas Brittell is up for Best Score.

Other nominations include Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing.

Dustin Lance Black, who won for Best Screenplay for Milk, was a part of the talking heads that announced the nominations this year. Jennifer Hudson and Gabourey Sidibe were also there to announce the nominees.

La La Land has 14 nominations, tying with All About Eve and Titanic for the most nominations at an Academy Awards.

The winners will be announced in a live broadcast hosted by Jimmy Kimmel on 26 February.
