Q & A with our friends at Hyatt Regency Calgary...
1. What makes your city such a great LGBT destination?
Calgary is recognized as the" Heart of the New West." We are a very diverse and cultured city that has come a long way in a relatively short period of time. With Calgary’s beautiful surroundings, cosmopolitan feel and located only an hour’s drive away from the iconic Canadian Rockies, Calgary has many highlights that will accommodate any LGBT Traveler.
2. What are some hotspots gay and lesbian travelers should check out when they are in the city?
Some hot spots to see in the region include Banff National Park, Lake Louise, and Kananaskis Country. These places are all gay- friendly and a great way to experience the mountains. In Calgary we have a wide range of museums, art galleries and a fantastic art design district. There are also trendy areas that have great shopping and dining in each quadrant of the core. Many of these areas are in close proximity to Hyatt Regency Calgary. The city also plays host to a variety of festivals in the summer months in beautiful downtown parks such as Prince’s Island Park, Olympic Plaza, Stephen Avenue Walk and in local neighbourhoods.
3. What are the top five reasons for gay travelers to visit?
Reason One: "The Alberta Gay Rodeo" This event is hugely popular, featuring cowboys and cowgirls from all over North America. It takes place annually during the Canada Day Long Weekend.
Reason Two: "The Calgary Stampede" This world-class event runs for10 days every July and is filled with fun for the traveler who likes a "Wild West" atmosphere. The Stampede, dubbed "The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth" includes one of the world’s biggest rodeos, huge exhibition grounds, midway, fireworks, talent competitions, parties and concerts. The entire city participates and is very lively during these exciting 10 days.
Reason Three: The LGBT does a Gay Coronation every July, highlighting the new Empress of the Gay Community.
Reason Four: We host the Labor Day Gay Pride Weekend in September. This is a city-wide celebration that is becoming more and more popular each year.
Reason Five: The Calgary Folk Festival takes place each year from July 26-29 at Prince’s Island Park, located downtown on the banks of the beautiful Bow River. The outdoor festival features world-class talent from roots and jazz to bluegrass and folk.
