Every once in a while, we run across a magical place where gay travelers will feel welcome and can take delight in knowing they’ve found a special spot to create memories that will last a lifetime. One such place is not what you might imagine – it’s not a glitzy-five-star hotel (although it's every bit Forbes 5 star!) – it’s a family-owned Montana ranch dating back to the late 1800s.
The Ranch at Rock Creek, located on 6,600 acres, is an all-inclusive guest ranch that first came across our radar only recently; however, its history dates back to the mining days, when in 1862, sapphires were first discovered in the Ranch creek! Talk about a “hidden gem” – this ranch truly is!
In addition to mining, ranching is also an intrinsic part of this homestead that began on the property in the late 1800s.
In 2007, Jim Manley, the current owner, lovingly transformed the ranch into what it is today - the world’s first Forbes 5-star ranch in Montana and a Relais & Chateau property. Remarkably, The Ranch has remained true to its origins and carries its storied past into new stories of the present day.
As such, guests will appreciate the authenticity of the homestead. The 48 private and secluded accommodations are both rustic and luxurious. Depending on the size of your party and needs, you can reserve everything from a 2-bedroom suite to a full house that can accommodate several guests. GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE THAT WAIT
As they say, good things are worth waiting for, and the way in which this awe-inspiring place was created spans millions of years. The idyllic landscape upon which The Ranch at Rock Creek sits is very much a part of the overall ambiance of this place. The river, the Sapphire Mountains (part of The Rocky Mountain range), the plains, and the gorgeous valley were formed during the last ice age that started 70 million years ago. The tectonic activity, along with a glacial lake in the area combined with floods from 12,000 years ago, all came together to create the magnificent setting.
OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
If fly-fishing is something you’ve been angling to do, they’ll arrange for you to have an expert guide accompany you. As you wade into the world-renowned, blue-ribbon trout stream (one of only 7 in the country), someone will be there to assist you every step of the way.
Another must-do? Learn about life on the ranch and immerse yourself in the full frontier experience. This is an educational-based opportunity to step into the horseshoes or jump into the saddle of a real rancher. You’ll learn the skillsets needed– from calving to feedings to veterinary techniques.
More fun is waiting for you when you mine for sapphires, attend a live rodeo, or simply drink in the wildlife and nature around you.
If skiing is your passion – they’ll set you up with transportation to and from the mountain, lift tickets, ski equipment, lunch at the lodge, and whatever else you need to sashay down the mountainside.
Other wonderful winter activities include horse-drawn sleigh rides, ice skating, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and more. They have a permit to go into the National Forest, so you’ll be able to experience things you might not otherwise be able to do on your own.
Some other year-round adventures include archery, clay target shooting sports, horseback riding, bike riding, walking, and all the Western ranching you can rope into your day.
Depending on which season you’re there, the activities vary, but one thing that is consistent is that everything can be customized to your personal tastes and needs while you’re on the ranch.

HOW TO GET THERE
Well, you could travel in your covered wagon or take the pony express to get there, but for all you jet-setters, you can fly private to the nearby Anaconda airstrip, which is located 35 minutes away, and The Ranch at Rock Creek will arrange to pick you up and drop you off making it as easy as possible.
Of course, you can also fly commercial and take a flight into Butte airport or Missoula airport, and The Ranch at Rock Creek will handle all ground transfers.
WHEN TO GO
As we mentioned, the year-round activities are boundless, so it’s lovely to experience all of the glorious seasons. However, this “hidden gem” is quickly becoming discovered, so plan at least a year ahead.
