Local Tips and Tricks

The Lake District has a generally mild maritime climate characterized by ample rainfall. Winters are wet with some snow and summers are relatively dry by comparison (average temperatures range from 0°C/32°F in January to 19°C/66°F in July). Layering is the way to go as the weather is unpredictable and can change rapidly in both summer and winter. Comfortable, sturdy shoes, a fleece and a waterproof jacket are recommended if you plan to go walking. Summer: Cool, light clothing, along with a sun hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and at least one warm sweater as the weather is changeable. Light jackets or jerseys are recommended for the evenings. Winter: Woollens and a warm coat for outdoors.
