The Upstairs Lounge “Fire” Memorial Plaque

In June of 2003, a bronze memorial plaque was set in the side walk near 141 Chartres Street marking 30 years since the fire of the Upstairs Lounge where 32 LGBT souls vanished. This was one of the worst fires in the history of New Orleans and the largest mass murder of LGBT people in American history. Personally, when I went to visit, I brought some bronze cleaner to clean the plaque. You might cry and get angry when you see this but it's an important part of our history and our struggle for equality. If you have a few hours, definitely visit the plaque.
