Primi Urban Cafe

Haven’t you always wondered where chefs go to eat when they get a night off? Primi—a small Italian spot off the main drag of St. Petersburg’s downtown – is that kind of place. The setting helps, centrally located and decked out in modern but casual décor, but the food is what draws the professionals in for late dinner.

Owned and run by a South African family, Primi’s menu has a few African flourishes—like curry in chicken pasta and yogurt on salads—but the core is exceptionally capable Italian classics. Chef Arno Von Waltsleben has a subtle touch with sauces, from earthy and rich Marsala light enough to pair with fresh fish to the Bay area’s best Bolognese. One taste of Arno’s life-changing sun-dried tomato tapenade, however, and that might be all you’ll want to eat.
