Gay Travel Hawaii, The Big Island

Hawaii - known to locals as the Big Island - is the youngest and largest of the Hawaiian island chain.  The gay-friendly Big Island is home to picturesque beaches, gorgeous waterfalls, hidden valleys and the world’s most active volcano. The Big Island is the size of all the other Hawaiian islands combined. It's the most geographically diverse island of the archipelago, with deserts, rainforests, volcanoes and, surprisingly, snow-capped mountains.

The mountains create a barrier that blocks the northeasterly trade winds, making the western side of the island the driest region in the archipelago. This coast has the best beaches and water conditions. The eastern coast is rugged, with pounding surf, tropical rainforests, and majestic waterfalls. Two main cities straddle the coasts; - Hilo on the east and Kailua-Kona on the west.

The Big Island is our gay travel pick for adventure. Visit historical parks, walk on black sand beaches, horseback ride, sail the Kona coast, check out the active volcano, snorkel with manta rays, scuba dive the blue water, swim with dolphins or see the island from a helicopter. Whatever your gay adventurous spirit wishes, most likely it can be experienced on the Big Island.

Gay beaches and regular events are arranged by gay locals, there is always something “gay” to do.  The real draw on the Big Island, however, is definitely one’s ability to escape the crowds and get lost in the brilliant landscape.

The more you do, the more you experience, the more you’ll understand what makes Hawaii, the Big Island, so special!
