LGBT Scene in Papeete

Papeete is the second largest city in French Polynesia, and as such has more of a nightlife scene than many other places in the area. It's still not much though. It's kinda like that bar off the train tracks outside of town that you once went to when you'd first come out… That being said though, Le Piano Bar on Rue de Ecoles in central Papeete has a clientele that includes rae rae, drag queens, and local gay men and women—but only after about 1am and only on weekends. The Scorpio Disco behind the Vaima Centre in Papeete is also popular for “popa’a” (western gays) and rae rae, but isn’t distinctly gay by any means. The whole island territory is not homophobic really though, so any venue you happen to find yourself will be fun and friendly.

There has recently been a movement for creating a gay-inclusive organization in the islands. It's called “Cousins Cousins Association of Tahiti,” and though primarily a French-language group, you can glean some information from their blog if you try. You can also like them on facebook
