LGBT Scene in Richmond

The gay scene in Richmond is not as robust as in some cities, but it is still popular and distinctive- there are a handful of gay bars and one predominantly lesbian bar. These venues are scattered across downtown Richmond, so there isn’t a particular “gay district.” The LGBT population of permanent residents is low, perhaps because of the assumption that Richmond is not very tolerant. Or perhaps, due to the strong gay presence on the campus of VCU, many of the venues cater to college students who are not necessarily from the city. One thing is certain though: the gay influence in Richmond is on the rise. Expect more gay oriented businesses to cater to this growing market and make this city a prime location for gays to visit and reside.
