Gay Richmond

Once the capital of the Confederacy, Richmond, Virginia (RVA) has garnered a reputation of being an intolerant city within the gay community. In actuality, Richmond is made up of an eclectic, vibrant mix of people and cultures. There is a balance between old school conservatism and new school style and swagger- perhaps best illustrated with the two major universities. The University of Richmond is more of a traditional, Southern private school. Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), in contrast, has more of an artsy, hipster feel.

Richmond is also home to some of the most unique boroughs in the country. Carytown is a colorful section of downtown with hundreds of locally owned shops, restaurants, dive bars, and boutiques. Or try your luck shopping in the historic Shockoe Slip, where you can wander the stone alleys and browse this trendy district that was founded in the 1600’s!

RVA is a place where you can be whoever you want to be. Creative types and free spirits give Richmond an attitude and edge that may surprise newcomers. For instance, Richmond is ranked as the third most tattooed city in the country! Meanwhile, southern hospitality is widespread and the people are polite and always happy to help. This clash of modern creativity meeting time-honored tradition makes Richmond a great travel destination for gays and straights alike.
