There are things you must be aware of when going to Brazil in general and Rio de Janeiro in particular. First, in the city, do not drink tap water; bottled water is a requirement here. There is also a serious street crime problem and you should leave all jewelry and other valuables at home, pick up a cheap watch for the trip, wear no gold chains and avoid obvious displays of wealth. Some knowledgeable travel people even advise picking up a cheap camera for the trip. In Rio, as in no other place in the world, heed warnings to put valuables in your hotel safe.
