There are lots of easy ways to get to Napa. The easiest is to fly directly to Santa Rosa, which is approximately 40 miles away from Napa. Or, fly into one of three international airports: San Francisco, Oakland or Sacramento, which are all approximately two hours from Napa. Renting a car will be easy, or take one of the shuttles, taxis, buses or limousine services from the airport to your hotel, vacation home, spa, or bed-and-breakfast. Once you’re in Napa, if you haven’t rented a car you can get around on “The Vine” Napa Valley Transit’s convenient bus line, or make use of a limo service, shuttle, or taxi.
When coordinating the timing of your Wine Country retreat, remember to avoid driving between San Francisco or Oakland and Napa on a Friday or Sunday afternoon unless you relish long hours of sitting in traffic. Also, keep in mind that many of the restaurants are closed between the last week of December and the second week of January, so plan your vacation around those weeks.
The Mediterranean climate of the Napa Valley tends to be a bit unpredictable. Mornings and evenings can be chilly, so pack a sweater and long pants, along with lighter clothes for warm afternoons. December, January, and early February are the coldest, rainiest months. The scenery is especially breathtaking leading up to and during Harvest Time from June through October, which are the area’s warmest months. Autumn is the most popular time to revel in the hedonistic pleasures for which the area is known, but all four seasons here are uniquely beautiful and full of Gay-friendly activities.
